Complaints Procedure

I aim to provide a professional and responsive service. If you are unhappy with my service or a bill, please tell me so that I can investigate and try to resolve the issue.

Manual confirmation required before publication: AJ W. E. Bennetts must confirm that the internal complaints process below matches the procedure used in practice, including any acknowledgement, investigation, review and response stages.

How to make a complaint

Please address your complaint directly to AJ W. E. Bennetts. You can complain by email, post or telephone:

Please provide:

  • your name and contact details
  • the matter or service concerned
  • what you believe went wrong and when
  • the outcome you would like
  • copies of any documents or correspondence that may help

How the complaint will be handled

I will review the complaint, the relevant file and correspondence, and may ask you for further information. I will provide a written response explaining my findings and any proposed resolution.

A final response will be provided as soon as reasonably possible and no later than eight weeks after the complaint is received. If you remain dissatisfied with the final response, or no final response has been provided within eight weeks, you may be able to ask the Legal Ombudsman to consider the complaint.

Manual confirmation required: confirm any additional internal acknowledgement, review or response stages and timescales before publication.

Legal Ombudsman

The Legal Ombudsman deals with complaints about legal service, including service and billing complaints. Its service is available to individuals and certain small businesses, charities, clubs and trusts. The Legal Ombudsman will confirm whether your complaint is eligible.

You must normally complain to me first. If you are dissatisfied with my final response, or I have not provided one within eight weeks, you may contact the Legal Ombudsman.

Generally, the Legal Ombudsman expects a complaint to be referred within the later of one year from the act or omission complained about or one year from when you should reasonably have known there was cause for complaint. You must also normally refer the complaint within six months of my final response, provided that response properly explains the six-month limit. The Legal Ombudsman may extend these limits where it considers that fair and reasonable.

Solicitors Regulation Authority

The SRA does not usually resolve complaints about poor service or bills; those are generally matters for the Legal Ombudsman. You can report concerns to the SRA where they relate to professional conduct or possible breaches of its rules, such as dishonesty, misuse of client money, discrimination, or acting without proper authority.
